Interiors

Leda’s interior works from the early 1980’s to the early 1990’s followed naturally from her close attention to domestic space. These paintings turn inward, to bedrooms, living rooms, furniture, books, and other familiar surroundings.

In the bedroom scenes, soft blues, reds, and patterned surfaces give the rooms a strong sense of enclosure and stillness. The bed, often carefully rendered, becomes one of the central forms within the composition.

In the living room works, Leda brings together furniture, rugs, shelves, and other objects that had become part of her daily world in Pietermaritzburg. Some of these interiors also reintroduce earlier works of her own, placed within the rooms themselves.

Her interest in human presence remains part of this body of work. In one interior, two figures kissing introduce a more intimate note within the quiet order of the room.
