Schooling
Primary Education
Leda’s primary education began at the local school in Porterville. She attended school there during her early years in the town, before continuing her education elsewhere in the Western Cape.
Her first schooling formed the beginning of her formal education within a small-town environment.
After completing her initial schooling in Porterville, Leda attended La Rochelle Girls’ Primary School in Paarl, also in the Western Cape Province.
La Rochelle was a well-established girls’ school with strong academic standards. Her time there exposed her to a broader educational environment than the one she had known in Porterville.
High School
Following her time at La Rochelle, Leda continued her education at Jan van Riebeeck High School in Cape Town.
Her extracurricular activities at Jan van Riebeeck included hockey and running.
On weekends, Leda spent time with her aunt and family at their hotel, ‘Kidodi’, in Three Anchor Bay, Cape Town.
In 1943, Leda matriculated with distinction. This led to her acceptance at the University of Stellenbosch. At the time, it was still relatively uncommon for a woman to continue to higher education.
